Car radios appeared in the early 1930s. The first car radios were quite bulky and expensive, and only a small number of people could afford them.
The first car radios were designed to receive longwave analog radio broadcasts. They had a built-in speaker and could be mounted on the front of the car. However, due to the fact that the signals were unstable and highly susceptible to interference, radios were not very popular at the beginning of their development.
The 1950s saw the introduction of new technologies such as FM radio that greatly improved sound quality and made radios more attractive to motorists. They became a standard component of in-car entertainment and remained so until the advent of new technologies such as CD players, MP3 players and, finally, smartphones.
